The Rev. Dr. Joshua Samuel is the Huron–Lawson Chair in Contextual Theology at Huron University College and serves as Theologian in Residence at St. Paul’s Cathedral. His teaching and ministry have taken place across the world, including in India and the United States, reflecting his deep commitment to theology that is rooted in lived experience, dialogue, and justice.
Joshua holds a PhD in Theology and Interreligious Engagement from Union Theological Seminary and has taught at institutions such as United Theological College in Bangalore and Union Theological Seminary in New York. He is the author and co-author of several significant works in theology and is currently engaged in research exploring liberation, reconciliation, and prophetic imagination within postcolonial and interreligious contexts.
Born and raised in Chennai, South India, Joshua is an ordained minister of the Church of South India, a member church of the Anglican Communion, and has served for nine years as a parish priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island. He brings to St. Paul’s a passion for theology as a public, people-centred practice — one that invites critical reflection, faithful dialogue, and action for the flourishing of communities.
